Le nombre de Montréalais de 40 ans et plus souffrant d’une MPOC parmi les utilisateurs de services de santé a diminué de plus de 6 000 entre 2000-2001 et 2005-2006. En 2005-2006, ils se répartissent relativement également entre les trois groupes d’âge et plus de la moitié présente un niveau de morbidité élevé. Les Montréalais souffrant d’une MPOC se retrouvent majoritairement dans les quintiles les plus défavorisés.

Le bureau des statistiques de la Commission européenne (Eurostat) a publié en juin dernier une étude qui propose un outil pour évaluer les bénéfices que REACH apportera à notre société. A partir de données collectées en 2007 sur 237 substances chimiques choisies au hasard, la Commission a établi un outil d'évaluation qui doit lui permettre de mesurer à l'avenir dans quelles proportions REACH a permis de réduire les risques pour la santé humaine et l'environnement liés à l'utilisation des substances chimiques. Différents types d'indicateurs seront utilisés tels que les changements dans la classification et l'étiquetage, des changements dans la qualité des fiches de données de sécurité, dans l'utilisation de substances toxiques dans les produits de grande consommation ou encore l'évolution des maladies professionnelles de la peau. La première évaluation devrait avoir lieu en 2012 soit cinq ans après le début de la mise en oeuvre de REACH.

La seconde journée européenne de sensibilisation au bon usage des antibiotiques est organisée le 18 novembre 2009 à l'initiative de la Commission Européenne et du Centre européen de prévention et de contrôle des maladies (ECDC) [1].
L'utilisation des antibiotiques crée une pression de sélection qui favorise l'acquisition et la dissémination de souches de bactéries résistantes tant en ville qu'à l'hôpital. Dans sa recommandation du 15 novembre 2001, le Conseil de l'Union Européenne invitait les Etats Membres à renforcer non seulement les systèmes de surveillance de la résistance aux antibiotiques mais aussi ceux de l'utilisation des antibiotiques.

A Report from the NIOSH Nanotechnology Research Center
Occupational safety and health issues of nanomaterials are complex. Because engineered nanomaterials are small yet have a relatively large surface area, they may have chemical, physical, and biological properties distinctly different from larger particles of similar chemical composition. Those properties may affect the ability of the nanomaterials to reach the gas exchange regions of the lung, travel from the lung throughout the body, penetrate dermal barriers, cross cell membranes, and interact at the molecular level. The types of nanomaterials and the opportunities for workplace
exposure to them continue to grow rapidly. The challenge is to effectively address the safety and health issues of nanotechnology while helping society realize nanotechnology's far-reaching
potential benefits.

10 % des salariés seraient exposés à des produits cancérogènes, même si les facteurs de risque liés au travail sont souvent peu visibles en ce qui concerne les cancers. L'employeur, responsable de la santé et de la sécurité de ses salariés, se doit de mettre en oeuvre une politique de prévention des cancers professionnels.

Strategic Plan
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is pleased to present the Strategic Plan for NIOSH Nanotechnology Research and Guidance: Filling the Knowledge Gaps. This plan updates the September 2005 strategic plan using knowledge gained from results of ongoing research as described in the 2007 report Progress Toward Safe Nanotechnology in the Workplace: A Report from the NIOSH Nanotechnology Research Center and the 2009 report Progress Toward Safe Nanotechnology in the Workplace: A Report from the NIOSH Nanotechnology Research Center, Project Updates for 2007 and 2008. The NIOSH nanotechnology research program is a cross-sector program that supports the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA). Nanotechnology provides many opportunities and challenges for all of us in occupational safety and health. The Strategic Plan for the nanotechnology program is the roadmap we are using to advance knowledge about the implications and applications of nanomaterials.

Review of the literature and national policies
The biological risks related to pandemics and epidemics can affect the health of many workers, particularly in specific occupations such as workers in health care, transport services or animal breeding, and workers who contribute to contingency measures when outbreaks occur. This working paper describes the main biological risks related to pandemics and major disease outbreaks, and presents policies and practices in EU Member States in relation to how occupational safety and health (OSH) is included in the assessment, recognition, recording and prevention of major disease outbreaks and pandemics. It also contains some case studies to highlight specific occupations and biological agents, and explain how OSH policies and practices are integrated.

Chemical Safety Assessment
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has published Guidance in a Nutshell: Chemical Safety Assessment, which is intended to assist industry in understanding the general provisions for conducting a Chemical Safety Assessment (CSA). ECHA states that the Guidance is aimed at non-experts who would like to understand the legal requirements under the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation regarding substance assessment. The Guidance provides an overview of what the CSA is and how it is performed and documented. It also outlines the communication needs down the supply chain and the resources required, in terms of time and expertise, to comply with the legal obligations.

Chemical agents and related occupations
In October 2009, 23 scientists from 6 countries met at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) to re-assess the carcinogenicity of a number of chemical compounds, complex mixtures and occupational exposures previously classified as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1) and to identify additional tumour sites and mechanisms of carcinogenesis.
