Peripheral Nervous System Function and Organophosphate Pesticide Use among Licensed Pesticide Applicators in the Agricultural Health Study
Background: Evidence is limited that long-term human exposure to organophosphate (OP) pesticides, without poisoning, is associated with adverse peripheral nervous system (PNS) function. Objective: To investigate associations between OP pesticide use and PNS function, we administered PNS tests to 701 male pesticide applicators in the Agricultural Health Study (AHS). Methods: Participants completed a neurological physical examination (NPx), electrophysiological tests, and tests of hand strength, sway speed and vibrotactile threshold. Self-reported information on lifetime use of 16 OP pesticides was...
Parkinson’s Disease: Workplace Risk Factors
Parkinson's disease is thought to be the second most common neurological disease (after Alzheimer's), affecting an estimated 34,000 to 60,000 Canadians and 4,500 to 8,000 British Columbians. Previous studies have examined associations between Parkinson's disease and genetic factors, environmental exposures (e.g. pesticides, heavy metals, solvents), and major head trauma. In an earlier study, the research team explored the distribution of Parkinson's disease within occupational groups. That work lead to the development of ideas about potential relationships between the disease and...
Acute Illnesses Associated With Insecticides Used to Control Bed Bugs
The common bed bug, Cimex lectularius, is a wingless, reddish-brown insect that requires blood meals from humans, other mammals, or birds to survive (1). Bed bugs are not considered to be disease vectors (2,3), but they can reduce quality of life by causing anxiety, discomfort, and sleeplessness (4). Bed bug populations and infestations are increasing in the United States and internationally (3,5). Bed bug infestations often are treated with insecticides, but insecticide resistance is a problem, and excessive use of insecticides or use of insecticides contrary to label directions can raise the...
U.S. EPA Proposes Policy on Nanoscale Materials in Pesticide Products
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) announced recently that U.S. EPA will obtain information on nanoscale materials in pesticide products to help the agency determine whether the registration of a pesticide may cause unreasonable adverse effects on the environment and human health. U.S. EPA plans to publish policy options in the Federal Register shortly. More information about the proposed notice is available at the U.S. EPA Web site. OECD survey on how pesticide ingredients other than the stated pesticide active ingredient(s) are reviewed and regulated
Survey results This report presents the results of a 2009 survey on those pesticide ingredients other than the stated pesticide active ingredient(s), sometimes called “inerts”, “excipients” or “formulants”. The objective of the survey was to obtain baseline information on how these ingredients are currently reviewed and regulated in OECD countries, as well as any plans for changes in the future. The countries' responses provide a basis for identifying common issues, possible work sharing opportunities, and possible areas for regulatory harmonisation. Source...
UK impact assessment of the proposed biocides regulation
In 2009 the European Commission proposed a directly-acting European Regulation on placing on the market and use of biocidal products. The Regulation will replace the existing Biocidal Products Directive (98/8/EC), and aims to streamline and reduce the cost of the existing regime while maintaining the level of protection to human and animal health and the environment that it currently offers. Pesticide Incidents Report 2009/10
This report provides information on incidents and complaints involving pesticides investigated by the Field Operations Directorate of the Health and Safety Executive between 1 April 2009 and 31 March 2010. The report comprises statistical information on complaints and enforcement; a report on alleged ill-health incidents reviewed by HSE's Pesticide Incidents Appraisal Panel; and environmental and other complaints not alleging ill health. A review of the role pesticides play in some cancers
Children, farmers and pesticide users at risk? Section 1 of this report provides a summary of the epidemiological and related data linking exposure to pesticides with certain cancers. It notes several studies suggesting that exposure to pesticides seems to confer a greater risk of several specific cancers including, but not limited to, Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL), soft tissue sarcoma, leukaemia, prostate cancer and brain cancer. Moreover, it provides a summary of the growing body of research indicating that pesticide exposure may play a role in hormone-related cancers including prostate, breast...
Acute Antimicrobial Pesticide-Related Illnesses Among Workers in Health-Care Facilities
Antimicrobial pesticides (e.g., sterilizers, disinfectants, and sanitizers) are chemicals used to destroy or suppress the growth of harmful microorganisms on inanimate objects and surfaces (1). Health-care facilities use antimicrobial pesticides to prevent pathogen transmission from contaminated environmental surfaces (2). Occupational exposures to antimicrobial pesticides are known to cause adverse health effects. To assess the nature and frequency of such exposures in health-care settings, CDC analyzed data from pesticide poisoning surveillance programs in California, Louisiana, Michigan, and...
Decontamination of agricultural sprayers
It is now recognised that pesticide residues on the external surfaces of sprayers could present a significant route of exposure for the spray operator and these residues exist despite sprayers being washed. The current study was undertaken to examine factors influencing the removal of residues from sprayer surfaces, to trial any developments on decontamination techniques on working farms, and to quantify operator exposure to pesticides during the actual washing process. Bangladesh : Pesticide poisoning takes its toll
An annual government survey of Bangladesh's health situation has found that pesticide-related poisoning is a leading cause of death, underscoring a major health concern. The 2009 Health Bulletin, which compiles health statistics from 2008, recorded 7,438 pesticide-related poisoning deaths at more than 400 hospitals nationwide amongst men and women aged 15-49. Of the deaths, direct pesticide poisoning accounted for 8 percent of the fatalities, preceded only by respiratory failure at 11 percent, said the bulletin. Best Practice Guidelines for Ground-spread Fertiliser in New Zealand
Working within the ground-spread fertiliser industry exposes workers to a number of potentially very serious hazards. Not only are high volumes of potentially harmful fertilisers involved, workers are often working alone and in a vast range of environmental conditions. These and other factors heighten the need for comprehensive operator training and job planning. http://www.osh.govt.nz/order/catalogue/ground-spread-fertiliser.shtml
