ECHA - the European Chemicals Agency has reflected on how they work and what they can do better. The new website is an example of that. It is much easier to use, simpler to search and more intuitive to navigate around. The website is also written in plainer English and is more informative, particularly for non-scientists. Also, most of the material is available in 22 languages. Source : www.echa.europa.eu
WorkSafeBC has launched the Hidden Killer website. The resource provides information on asbestos; where asbestos is found; the dangers of asbestos; how to handle asbestos; plus Understanding the impact of asbestos: the Paul Douglas story. Douglas, a boilermaker, was given three to six months to live when he was diagnosed with mesothelioma but survived for more than a decade and became an outspoken advocate for workplace safety and the dangers of asbestos in the workplace.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is making available hundreds of studies on chemicals that were previously treated as confidential business information (CBI). EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson said the move will increase transparency and enhance the agency's chemicals management program. Newly available information can be found using EPA's Chemical Data Access Tool. Since 2009, 577 formerly confidential chemical identities are no longer confidential and more than 1,000 health and safety studies are now accessible to the public that were previously unavailable or only available...
ChemSec, The International Chemical Secretariat, is a non-profit organisation dedicated to working towards a toxic free environment. Based in Göteborg, Sweden, ChemSec was founded in 2002 by four Swedish environmental organisations: Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, WWF Sweden, Nature and Youth and Friends of the Earth Sweden. These NGOs are the ChemSec member organisations and are represented on the ChemSec board. ChemSec operates through support from a broad spectrum of society. A main contributor is the Swedish Government, but ChemSec also receives financial support from charitable...
Users of eChemPortal are now able to search specific endpoint properties for substances contained in The Ecological Categorization Results from Canada Database. This Database contains the ecological categorization results for substances on the Canadian Domestic substance list and the supporting data on: Inherent toxicity, Persistency and Bioaccumulation. Source : http://www.cancer-environnement.fr/
Chemical Hazards Emergency Medical Management (CHEMM) is a web-based resource developed to help first responders and other healthcare providers and planners to plan for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate the effects of mass-casualty incidents involving unintentional or terrorist chemical releases. CHEMM was produced by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, in cooperation with NIOSH and other partners. CHEMM is available on the Web or downloadable in advance if the internet becomes inaccessible during an event. Source...

Chesar is designed to help companies carry out their Chemical Safety Assessments (CSA) and preparing their Chemical Safety Reports (CSR). The tool developed by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is a plug-in to IUCLID 5. Chesar version 1.2 can now be downloaded from the Chesar website. Chesar 1.2 enables the users to generate the exposure scenarios for communication to downstream users. These exposure scenarios can then be annexed to the extended Safety Data Sheet. Chesar also enables the registrant to create a full Chemical Safety Report (CSR), once the hazard assessment and (if required) the...
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is making it easier to find data about chemicals. EPA is releasing two databases - the Toxicity Forecaster database (ToxCastDB) and a database of chemical exposure studies (ExpoCastDB) - that scientists and the public can use to access chemical toxicity and exposure data. Improved access supports EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson's priorities of protecting Americans' health by assuring the safety of chemicals and expanding the conversation on environmentalism. This bulletin service aims to provide an overview of publications of studies that have examined the exposure and potential health effects of nanomaterials, particularly in the occupational setting. The bibliographies may not represent the entirety of the literature identified as filter terms particular to HSE were applied. For example the summary of toxicity studies may list only those that are directly relevant to human health. Source : http://www.hse.gov.uk/nanotechnology/nano-alerts.htm
The Column Model, a practical aid for the identification of possible substitutes for hazardous chemicals, is now fit for GHS. Under the German Hazardous Substances Ordinance, firms are required to replace hazardous substances if possible with substances with a lower health risk. As an aid to the assessment of possible substitute substances, the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of the German Social Accident Insurance (IFA) has developed the Column Model. On the basis of just a small amount of information on the products in question, substitute substances can be assessed with the aid...
