Towards Effective Intervention
Issue Workplace abuse and violence in health care settings, particularly against nurses, is increasingly recognized as a problem of epidemic proportions, with negative implications for nurses' job satisfaction and ability to provide care effectively. This study explored nurses' experiences and perceptions of workplace violence and its impact, in order to increase the ability to intervene effectively on behalf of nurses abused at work. The study included a review of incident reports, interviews with nurses and the development of a DVD on workplace violence that demonstrates techniques for de-escalating potentially violent situations.

Increased pressure for labour market flexibility and increasing demand over workers? performance have fostered the idea that working conditions, in most European countries, have progressively deteriorated with adverse effects on psychological well-being and mental health. This paper investigates the links between contractual arrangements, working conditions and mental health using time-series cross-section data for 15 European countries.

Sleepiness leads to a deterioration in performance and attention, and is associated with an increased risk of injury. Jet lag and shift work disorder are circadian rhythm sleep disorders which result in sleepiness and can elevate injury risk. They create a need for individuals to operate at times which are different to those dictated by their circadian rhythms. Consequently there is also a need for interventions to help ensure that these persons can do so safely. Caffeine has a potential role in promoting alertness during times of desired wakefulness in persons with jet lag or shift work disorder, however its effects on injury and error are unclear.

Oral health care has been subject to significant legislative reforms in the 21st century. The 2002 Dental Care Reform and the 2005 Care Guarantee have had an effect on the working conditions and well-being of both public and private sector dentists. It is necessary to understand the resources and solutions available for dentists and other oral health care professionals to adapt to changes in their occupation, stay well and healthy and continue their work successfully.

The report looks into Fitness to Drive in the work-related context. A successful organisation will benefit in a number of ways from workplace health promotion, and it therefore makes sound business sense to ensure that employees are fit to drive. Driving for work is a demanding task and exposes employees to significant risks since conditions such as work related stress or sleepiness resulting from driving long hours can play a role. The report covers existing legislation, examples of initiatives and case studies, and recommendations to the EU, to EU Member States, and to employers.

Abstract
Background: Occupational heat stress is a well-known problem, particularly in tropical countries, affecting workers, health and well-being. There are very few recent studies that have reported on the effect of heat stress on mental health, or overall health in workers, although socioeconomic development and rapid urbanization in tropical developing countries like Thailand create working conditions in which heat stress is likely. Objective: This study is aimed at identifying the relationship between self-reported heat stress and psychological distress, and overall health status in Thai workers. Results: 18% of our large national cohort (>40,000 subjects) often works under heat stress conditions and males are exposed to heat stress more often than females. Furthermore, working under heat stress conditions is associated with both worse overall health and psychological distress (adjusted odds ratios ranging from 1.49 to 1.84). Conclusions: This association between occupational heat stress and worse health needs more public health attention and further development on occupational health interventions as climate change increases Thailand's temperatures.
Keywords: occupational heat stress; psychological distress; poor overall health; Thailand
