Implications of work effort and discretion for employee well-being and career-related outcomes
An integrative assessment How does work effort affect employee outcomes? The authors bridge distinct literatures on the well-being versus career-related implications of work effort by analyzing the relation of overtime work and work intensity to both types of outcomes. They also extend examination of the role of discretion in modifying the effects of work effort from well-being to career-related outcomes. Using data from the fifth and sixth European Working Conditions Surveys, the authors show that greater work effort relates strongly to reduced well-being and modestly to inferior career-related...
Job strain and informal caregiving as predictors of long-term sickness
A longitudinal multi-cohort study This study is the first to investigate the joint effects of job strain and informal caregiving on long-term sickness absence. The main finding was that informal caregiving responsibilities and/or high job strain predicted long-term sickness absence among women.
Gender, Job Authority, and Depression
Using the 1957–2004 data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study, we explore the effect of job authority in 1993 (at age 54) on the change in depressive symptoms between 1993 and 2004 (age 65) among white men and women. Within-gender comparisons indicate that women with job authority (defined as control over others' work) exhibit more depressive symptoms than women without job authority, whereas men in authority positions are overall less depressed than men without job authority. Between-gender comparisons reveal that although women have higher depression than men, women's disadvantage...
Workplace bullying as an antecedent of mental health problems
A five-year prospective and representative study PURPOSE: The present study investigates the proposed long-term relationship between exposure to workplace bullying and subsequent mental health in the form of anxiety and depression with a time lag of 5 years, exploring potential gender differences in these relationships. METHODS: The study employs a prospective design with a 5-year time lag in a representative sample of the Norwegian workforce. A cohort of 1,613 employees reported on their exposure to workplace bullying and their symptoms of anxiety and depression at both measurement times. RESULTS...
Harm to those who serve
Effects of direct and vicarious customer-initiated workplace aggression While there is a large body of research on the effects of being a direct target of workplace aggression, there is far less research on the vicarious experience of aggression at work, despite the fact that more people experience workplace aggression vicariously (i.e., observe it or hear about it) than they do directly. In this study, we develop and test a model of the effects of direct and vicarious exposure to aggression that is directed at employees by customers. Structural equation modeling provided support for the proposed...
The impact of job stress due to the lack of organisational support on occupational injury
OBJECTIVES : The aim of this study was to analyse the association between job stress and occupational injuries. METHODS : A prospective cohort study in a sample of 10 667 workers belonging to the insured population of the Mutual Insurance Company in Spain. Job stress was assessed with the Spanish version of the Job Stress Survey. A 1-year follow-up of the workers' clinical records was conducted to determine the incidence of occupational injuries, and the incidence rate per 1000 workers-year was calculated. The associations between the incidence of occupational injuries, job stress and job stress...
