Occupational safety and health culture, or more briefly 'OSH culture', can be seen as a concept for exploring how informal organisational aspects influence OSH in a positive or negative way. The aim is to convey up-to-date information on this complex topic in a straightforward, condensed way, trying to build a bridge between research and practice. The main approaches and methods that exist to assess the safety culture in an organisation are presented and discussed. This review gives an overview and selection of useful tools and techniques from the EU domain and abroad. Source : http://osha...
A number of major hazard organisations have been attempting to influence the organisational and safety culture at their sites to transform them into a high reliability organisation (ie organisations that are able to manage and sustain almost error-free performance despite operating in hazardous conditions where the consequences of errors could be catastrophic) with a positive safety culture. In recent years there has been a huge increase in the literature talking about the control of major hazard risks, in particular the philosophies of high reliability organisations, resilience management and...
A newly released survey on mental health in the workplace shows there could be a connection between stressful and negative working conditions and the mental health of workers. Most mental health problems, the study finds, are a result of a negative or mentally toxic workplace. The survey, conducted by the Institute of Health Economics (IHE), a not-for-profit research organization in Alberta, found that most mental health problems stem from negative working conditions. Researchers went on to conclude that the most effective way to promote mental well-being in the workplace is to change the work...
There is a wealth of information on workplace culture, interventions, capacity building and managing work health and safety risks. Less is known about socio-psychological factors, such as motivation, attitudes and perceptions that influence work health and safety policy, procedures, processes and outcomes. The main aim of the Motivations, Attitudes, Perceptions and Skills (MAPS) project was to collect information on the drivers of work health and safety behaviour and provide findings which will encourage policy discussion and inform the development and implementation of work health and safety policies...
The present study describes a response to eight tragic deaths over an eighteen month times span on a fast track construction project on the largest commercial development project in U.S. history. Four versions of a survey were distributed to workers, foremen, superintendents, and senior management. In addition to standard Likert-scale safety climate scale items, an open-ended item was included at the end of the survey. A naturally occurring quasi-field experiment in a multi-generational setting Outcomes associated with an office redesign aimed at decreasing workspace while enhancing perceptions of organizational culture and work-related attitudes are examined within a financial services organization. Findings show that employees assigned to the redesigned office environment report less workspace and more distractions than those who remained in a cubicle environment, but that this finding was moderated by age generation. Amongst the planned activities of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for 2009/10, a significant element is aimed at reaching and influencing two different audiences with regards to LEV (Local Exhaust Ventilation). These audiences are: supply-side stakeholders; and SME businesses that use LEV to control their employees' exposure to hazardous substances. To inform these activities, a qualitative research study was carried out with users and suppliers of LEV equipment in April, May and June 2009. Source : http://www.hse.gov.uk/research/rrhtm/rr787.htm
What are the current links between health and safety of Australian workplaces and corporate performance? The Business of Safety survey provides an insight into how Australian organisations regard workplace health and safety as a driver of organisational performance and employee engagement. The Australian Institute of Management (AIM) VT and the Safety Institute of Australia (SIA) jointly surveyed Board members, CEOs, managers, support personnel and occupational health and safety (OHS) specialists on health and safety management in their organisations. The anecdotal experience of new entrants in the UK offshore industry is that they are not, as a group, safer or less safe than established organisations. Similarly, the organisational arrangements that are sometimes associated with new entrants - such as the separation of ownership and operation - are not clearly less safe than more traditional arrangements. What seems to matter more is a deeper capacity to make chosen ways of organising work. This particularly involves being 'rigorous': not just developing effective safety practices but dealing with the by-products and side-effects of...
The Voice of Nebraska's Meatpacking Workers Over the last decade, important efforts have been made to shed light on the conditions of workers within the meatpacking industry and create momentum for change.1 What makes this report unique is that it focuses on what workers see and experience on a daily basis and their thoughts and ideas about what needs to change. What is apparent from this report is that meatpacking workers care deeply about getting this story out to the public in order to improve safety conditions in the plants. We surveyed 455 workers across Nebraska – one of the country's...
Since 2000 there has been a significant reduction in fatal accidents and other injuries in the construction industry. This reduction has been attributed in part to the focus of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) on influencing large firms. In order to encourage the continuation of this downward trend, the HSE’s Small Sites Project was established to bring about the adoption of sensible risk management strategies to improve standards of health and safety on Small Sites. There is a specific focus on those sites with 5 or fewer employees on site. http://www.hse.gov.uk/research/rrhtm/rr719...
Aboriginal enterprises work in a unique political, social and economic context.
