Environnement socio-économique (RSS)
The number of hours worked per week continues to drift downwards, on average – the result of more people working part time, fewer people working long hours, and a fall in the collectively agreed working hours in many countries. Foundation Findings provide pertinent background information and policy pointers for all actors and interested parties engaged in the current European debate on the future of social policy. The contents are based on Foundation research and reflect its autonomous and tripartite structure. Source : http://www.eurofound.europa.eu/publications/htmlfiles/ef1145.htm
The health of the U.S. workforce is an issue of importance to both workers and their employers. There is a wealth of evidence on occupational safety and health hazards that may potentially affect workers' health. In addition to these hazards, personal characteristics and conditions, such as age, gender, genetics, or weight, can impact a person's work and interact with workplace hazards. Individual characteristics and conditions may change the way workers respond to hazards which they may be exposed to on the job. In addition, employers face burgeoning costs of workforce healthcare which...

Stress is, for the first time, the most common cause of long-term sickness absence for both manual and non-manual employees, according to this year’s Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD)/Simplyhealth Absence Management survey. A link between job security and mental health problems is also revealed in the survey. Employers planning to make redundancies in the next six months are significantly more likely to report an increase in mental health problems among their staff (51% compared with 32% who are not planning redundancies). For manual workers, stress is now level with...
The European Social Survey data are used to analyze informal employment at the main job in 30 countries. Overall, informality decreases from South to West to East to North. However, dependent work without contract is more prevalent in Eastern Europe than in the West, except for Ireland, the UK and Austria. Between 2004 and 2009, no cases found when unemployment and dependent informality rates in a country went up together, suggesting that work without contract is pro-cyclical in Europe. Dependent informality rate is inversely related to skills (measured by either schooling or occupation). The low...

In most developed countries, there has been an increase in the number of employment arrangements that are temporary and insecure. There are concerns that these employment arrangements may have adverse effects on the health of workers. In a longitudinal study of a representative sample of Canadian workers, certain work characteristics associated with precarious employment—i.e. low pay, no pay increase, substantial unpaid overtime, no pension and manual work—put workers at increased risk of poor physical health.
Demographic trends indicate that the make up of the labour force in the UK (and other developed countries) is changing. Older workers are becoming more prevalent in the workforce, there are fewer new workers joining the labour force and older workers are continuing to retire early (Hotopp, 2005, 2007). These changes to the labour force could lead to labour and skills shortages in the future and have implications for the economy in terms of the age dependency ratio (Khan, 2009). The research in this area suggests that employers can have stereotyped views of the abilities and attitudes of older workers...

The potential of short-time working schemes : ERM Report 2010 In the face of recession, falling demand and the consequent slowing of production, short-time working and temporary layoff schemes have been extended (or introduced) in many Member States. These schemes, often with the aid of public funds, reduce working time, while protecting workers' incomes and company solvency; frequently, the time spent not working is used for training instead. This report examines the practice of reduced working time across Europe, and looks in detail at how it is implemented in 10 Member States, with a view...
