Differences in safety training among smaller and larger construction firms with non-native workers
Evidence of overlapping vulnerabilities Collaborative efforts between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) led to a report focusing on overlapping occupational vulnerabilities, specifically small construction businesses employing young, non-native workers. Following the report, an online survey was conducted by ASSE with construction business representatives focusing on training experiences of non-native workers. Results were grouped by business size (50 or fewer employees or more than 50 employees). Smaller businesses...

New NIOSH Training Offers Fatigue Management for Pilots in the Land of the Midnight Sun
For a pilot working in Western Alaska, the amount of daylight during their work day can vary as much as 14 hours between the summer and winter solstice (or more the farther north you go). These aviators often fly multiple legs each day, serving as a transportation link to over 250 villages across the state. In fact, over 80% of Alaska's communities are not connected by roads. Vast distances, long hours of daylight, short flying seasons, and wildly variable weather can all contribute to the development of fatigue. Fatigue is a general lack of alertness and degradation in mental and physical...
Effectiveness of participatory training in preventing accidental occupational injuries
A randomized-controlled trial in China This is the first large scale randomized controlled trial documenting the effectiveness of a participatory approach to occupational health and safety training in reducing work injuries and re-injuries among industrial workers. This approach can be adopted and tried out in other settings, and is expected to help reduce the huge burdens of work injuries to workers, their families and society. Source: Yu, I. Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention for New Nurses
Nurses continue to sustain musculoskeletal injuries even with increased emphasis on safe patient handling and mobility (SPHM) and organizational cultures of safety to protect health care workers. Analysis of data from 2011-2014 registered nurse graduates explored hospital safety culture, SPHM education/training, and incidence of new-nurse musculoskeletal injury. Results indicated hospitals provided some type of SPHM education and training, but 46% of study participants were not informed or aware of national SPHM standards or guidelines. Merely 13.9% of participants stated a written “no manual...
Active behaviour change safety interventions in the construction industry
A systematic review The aims of this paper were to systematically review the evidence for the effectiveness of active behaviour change safety interventions in the construction industry; and to determine the intervention characteristics most commonly associated with effectiveness in reducing injury rates and improving safety behaviour - intensity/frequency/duration, behaviour change techniques (BCTs) and theory-base. An electronic literature search (June 2014) was conducted to identify eligible interventions: those involving active involvement from workers/management in the construction industry;...
Best practices for health and safety technology transfer in construction
BACKGROUND: Construction continues to be a dangerous industry, yet solutions that would prevent injury and illness do exist. Prevention of injury and illness among construction workers requires dissemination, adoption, and implementation of these effective interventions, or "research to practice" (r2p). METHODS: CPWR recruited participants with experience and insight into effective methods for diffusion of health and safety technologies in this industry for a symposium with 3 group sessions and 3 breakout groups. The organizers reviewed session notes and identified 141 recommendations...

Réalisée avec le cabinet Adventi, cette enquête montre une réelle connaissance des problématiques de prévention des risques professionnels, dont la prise en compte concrète est cependant variable selon les enseignes. Elle met également en évidence plusieurs leviers de prévention...
Improving health and safety conditions in agriculture through professional training of Florida farm labor supervisors
Because farm labor supervisors (FLSs) are responsible for ensuring safe work environments for thousands of workers, providing them with adequate knowledge is critical to preserving worker health. Yet a challenge to offering professional training to FLSs, many of whom are foreign-born and have received different levels of education in the US and abroad, is implementing a program that not only results in knowledge gains but meets the expectations of a diverse audience. By offering bilingual instruction on safety and compliance, the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences...
Assessing the effectiveness of the Pesticides and Farmworker Health Toolkit
A curriculum for enhancing farmworkers' understanding of pesticide safety concepts Among agricultural workers, migrant and seasonal farmworkers have been recognized as a special risk population because these laborers encounter cultural challenges and linguistic barriers while attempting to maintain their safety and health within their working environments. The crop-specific Pesticides and Farmworker Health Toolkit (Toolkit) is a pesticide safety and health curriculum designed to communicate to farmworkers pesticide hazards commonly found in their working environments and to address Worker Protection...
Identifying construction supervisor competencies for effective site safety
Construction supervisors are crucial to eventual site safety performance. In the United States, the OSHA 30-hour training is becoming the de facto standard for supervisor safety competence. A literature review of recommended supervisor safety competencies reveals gaps when compared to the OSHA 30-hour training contents. We address this gap by identifying the necessary knowledge-based safety competencies that are most important for the front-line construction supervisor and prioritizing them for the first time. A Delphi process confirmed that knowledge of pre job planning, organizing work flow,...
The effects of Crew Resource Management (CRM) training on flight attendants' safety attitudes
INTRODUCTION: A number of well-known incidents and accidents had led the aviation industry to introduce Crew Resource Management (CRM) training designed specifically for flight attendants, and joint (pilot and flight attendant) CRM training as a way to improve teamwork and communication. The development of these new CRM training programs during the 1990s highlighted the growing need for programs to be evaluated using research tools that had been validated for the flight attendant population. METHOD: The FSAQ (Flight Safety Attitudes Questionnaire-Flight Attendants) was designed specifically to...
Identifying fall-protection training needs for residential roofing subcontractors
Falls remain the leading cause of injuries and fatalities in the small residential roofing industry and analogous investigations are underrepresented in the literature. To address this issue, fall-protection training needs were explored through 29 semi-structured interviews among residential roofing subcontractors with respect to recommendations for the design of fall-protection training. Content analysis using grounded theory was conducted to analyze participants' responses. Results of the analysis revealed six themes related to the design of current fall-protection training: (1) barriers...

A review of virtual reality as a medium for safety related training in mining
A common problem for high risk industries such as mining is how to provide effective safety related training. Virtual reality simulation offers the opportunity to develop perceptual expertise, perceptuo-motor skills, and cognitive skills such as problem-solving, and decision-making under stress, without exposing trainees or others to unacceptable risks. This review examines the evidence for the effectiveness of virtual reality as a medium for safety related training in mining. Evidence exists to demonstrate the effectiveness of virtual reality as a medium for safety related training in a range...
Visualizing safety assessment by integrating the use of game technology
Construction is undoubtedly the most dangerous industry in Hong Kong, being responsible for 76% of all fatal accidents in the region--around twenty times more than any other industry--and involving a loss of an estimated 145,000 man-days each year through accidents on site. In this paper, a new safety assessment method, termed the 4D Interactive Safety Assessment, is described which offers an improvement. This involves individual construction workers being presented with 4D virtual risky scenarios concerning their project and a range of possible actions for selection. The method provides an analysis...

A commentary on routes to competence in the construction sector – RR877
The health and safety record of the UK construction sector is a prime focus of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), combining as it does high fatality and injury rates with relatively high rates of work-related ill-health. Persuasive proof of the link between competence and health and safety is difficult to demonstrate but, nevertheless, 'competence' has been central to improving the sector's health and safety performance since the late 1980s. The key questions of this research are whether current routes to competence - qualifications (both work-based and college-based), short courses...
