Adolescent workers' experiences of and training for workplace violence
Adolescent workers may not be aware that violence is a safety concern in the workplace. As part of a larger mixed-methods pilot study, investigators used a self-administered survey and individual interviews with 30 adolescent workers from a chain of food service stores in a Midwestern metropolitan area to explore experiences of workplace violence (WPV) and ways of learning WPV-specific information. Participants reported experiencing verbal and sexual harassment and robberies. Most participants reported awareness of WPV-specific policies and procedures at their workplace; the ways participants reported...
Assessment of occupational health and safety hazard exposures among working college students
Background Adolescents and young adults have higher injury rates than their adult counterparts in similar jobs. This study used the working college student population to assess health and safety hazards in the workplace, characterize related occupational diseases and injuries, and describe worker health/safety activities provided by employers. Methods College students (≥17 years old) were assessed via online surveys about work history, workplace exposure to hazards, occupational diseases/injuries, and workplace health/safety activities. Results Approximately half (51%) of participants (n ...

Identifying fall-protection training needs for residential roofing subcontractors
Falls remain the leading cause of injuries and fatalities in the small residential roofing industry and analogous investigations are underrepresented in the literature. To address this issue, fall-protection training needs were explored through 29 semi-structured interviews among residential roofing subcontractors with respect to recommendations for the design of fall-protection training. Content analysis using grounded theory was conducted to analyze participants' responses. Results of the analysis revealed six themes related to the design of current fall-protection training: (1) barriers...

Training teachers to deliver risk education – Examples of mainstreaming OSH into teacher training programmes
This report presents cases which involve training in-service and future teachers in either occupational safety and health (OSH) or in delivering risk education . Ideally, all teachers should receive training about OSH in their working lives and how to incorporate risk education into their daily work. If getting risk education properly embedded in the school curriculum is challenging, then it is even more difficult to get it into training programmes for future teachers. However, the cases present various approaches and methods that could be considered or elaborated upon. Source : http://osha.europa...
Training promotes safer practices
A systematic review led by the Institute for Work & Health shows that training positively influences worker practices, making it an important part of multi-component health and safety programs. The review concluded that health and safety training promotes safer practices among workers and, as such, should be delivered by workplaces as part of a larger OHS program. On its own, however, training will not necessarily prevent injuries and illnesses. Le marché des expéditions maritimes par conteneur représente environ 16 pour cent du volume des marchandises mondiales transportées (en tonnes). Le forum s'efforcera d'adopter une approche...
Training paid for by employees jumps by 50% in the past five years
One in ten workers (9%) paid for their own job training in 2010, the 5th European Working Conditions Survey has found. This represents an increase of 50% over the past 5 years. 'While an increase in training is welcome and in line with European policy objectives, we would like somehow to nuance it: it would be very hard to say that levels of training provided are high.' says Agnès Parent-Thirion, head of surveys and trend analysis at Eurofound. 'It is also the most educated employees who receive and pay for training. Inequalities between high skilled clerical and low skilled...
Human factors in the major hazard industries

The second report, from Oxford University (RR772) details the offshore working time arrangements in operation in the...
