Occupational safety and health interventions to protect young workers from hazardous work – A scoping review
Abstract Occupational injury rates are higher among young people when compared to older age groups. Objective Identifying preventive occupational safety and health interventions that aim at protecting young workers from hazards at work while considering their ongoing physical and mental maturation. Methods We ran a sensitive search strategy in twelve electronic databases to locate studies. Two review authors independently screened titles and abstracts, and later full texts for eligibility. One person extracted the details of studies and another checked for errors. Data were analyzed in an iterative...
Prevalence and demographic differences in microaccidents and safety behaviors among young workers in Canada
INTRODUCTION: The present study examines the self-reported frequency of non-lost work time workplace injuries ("microaccidents") and the frequency of three types of work-related safety behaviors (i.e., safety voice, safety compliance, and safety neglect) recalled over a four-week period. METHOD: We analyzed data on microaccidents and safety behaviors from 19,547 young workers (aged 15-25years, Mdn=18years; 55% male) from multiple Canadian provinces. RESULTS: Approximately one-third of all young workers recalled experiencing at least one microaccident at work in the last four weeks. Comparisons...
Flexicurity: Actions at Company Level
The aim of flexicurity is to improve employment opportunities for workers, while at the same time increasing flexibility, enabling organisations to adapt their operations and employment levels to business needs. The past few years have, however, been particularly challenging for European labour markets: the recent financial crisis and recession have had an inevitable negative impact on EU labour markets and unemployment levels. This has called into question the effectiveness of the flexicurity strategy in terms of supporting vulnerable workers. Eurofound research in six EU Member States analysed...
The unique developmental considerations of youth-related work injuries
Adolescents and young adults experience higher risks of occupational injuries and fatalities compared to adults. Consequently, understanding the risk and protective factors of a young worker through a developmental lens is all the more compelling. The following manuscript describes the developmental processes of adolescence using a bioecological framework. It describes how factors such as neuromaturation, pubertal development, physical growth, and social contexts may place youth at greater risk of injury and other negative outcomes in the work environment. The emphasis of the paper is on the developmental...
