Organizational change and employee mental health
A prospective multilevel study of the associations between organizational changes and clinically relevant mental distress Objective: The goal of this paper was to elucidate the relationship between exposure to separate, multiple or repeated organizational change at both individual- and work-unit level and subsequent clinically relevant mental distress amongst employees two years after change had taken place. Methods: A full panel, prospective design was utilized. Data were collected at two time-points two years apart, by self-administered, online questionnaires. Organizational change was measured...
Implications of work effort and discretion for employee well-being and career-related outcomes
An integrative assessment How does work effort affect employee outcomes? The authors bridge distinct literatures on the well-being versus career-related implications of work effort by analyzing the relation of overtime work and work intensity to both types of outcomes. They also extend examination of the role of discretion in modifying the effects of work effort from well-being to career-related outcomes. Using data from the fifth and sixth European Working Conditions Surveys, the authors show that greater work effort relates strongly to reduced well-being and modestly to inferior career-related...
A two-wave study on workplace bullying after organizational change
A moderated mediation analysis The role of organizational change in the process leading to the development of bullying has received only little attention so far. The present longitudinal study aimed at filling this gap by examining a moderated mediation model through Structural Equation Modelling where the mediating effect of psychological strain in the relationship between workload and workplace bullying is moderated by the experience of organizational change. Data were available for 141 university employees (65.2% females). The moderating role of organizational change was tested through the multi...
Employees’ drug purchases before and after organizational downsizing
A natural experiment on the Norwegian working population (2004–2012) Private sector employees in Norway exposed to major organizational downsizing during the period 2004–2012 had elevated odds of purchasing antidepressants, hypnotics/sedatives, anxiolytics, antipsychotics, insulins, cardiovascular- and thyroid drugs around the time of downsizing, compared to the situation three years earlier. We suggest a strengthening of preventive health initiatives and systematic involvement from occupational health services in downsizing processes. Source: Kaspersen, S. L., Pape, K., Carlsen, F...
Organizational change, psychosocial work environment, and non-disability early retirement
A prospective study among senior public employees To date, this is the most exhaustive study to examine voluntary early retirement behavior among senior public service employees exposed to organizational change and subsequent assessment of the psychosocial work environment on the work-unit level. Decision-makers should consider the impact of organizational change and the psychosocial work environment in strategies to maintain senior public employees in the labor market. Globalization, Work, and Cardiovascular Disease
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), a global epidemic, is responsible for about 30% of all deaths worldwide. While mortality rates from CVD have been mostly declining in the advanced industrialized nations, CVD risk factors, including hypertension, obesity, and diabetes, have been on the increase everywhere. Researchers investigating the social causes of CVD have produced a robust body of evidence documenting the relationships between the work environment and CVD, including through the mechanisms of psychosocial work stressors. We review the empirical evidence linking work, psychosocial stressors, and...
Work demands and health consequences of organizational and technological measures introduced to enhance the quality of home care services
This study of home care workers in a Norwegian municipality aimed to examine the effect of two measures involving organizational (job checklists) and technological (personal digital assistants) job aids on perceived work demands and musculoskeletal health. Questionnaire data was collected in 2009 (n = 138, response rate 76.2%) and 2011 (n = 80, response rate 54%). Forty-six home care workers responded at both waves. Respondents were assigned into ‘high', ‘moderate' and ‘low' strain groups based on their responses to open and closed survey questions regarding impact...
Employer downsizing and older workers’ health
We estimate the effect of employer downsizing on older workers' health outcomes using different approaches to control for endogeneity and sample selection. With the exception of the insrumental variables approach, wich provides large imprecise estimates, our results suggest that employer downsizing increases the probability that older workers rate their health as fair or poor; increases the risk of showing symptoms of clinical depression; and increases the risk of being diagnosed with stroke, arthritis, and psychiatric or emotional problems. We find weaker evidence that downsizing increases...

Measuring the dynamics of organisational change and restructuring
The Meadow project aims to establish Guidelines for collecting and interpreting data on organisational change and restructuring and their economic and social impact. The Guidelines contain two surveys: one for employers and one for employees. The surveys contain a wide range of questions relating to organisational dynamics and organisational change, capturing data from the perspective of both the employer and the employee. The Association Between Workers' Employability and Burnout in a Reorganization Context
Longitudinal Evidence Building Upon the Conservation of Resources Theory This longitudinal study probes the relationship between employability and burnout among employees from a company undergoing reorganization. We advanced employability as a personal resource that relates negatively to burnout. We expected that this hypothesis would hold for different operationalizations of employability, including (1) job-related and (2) transferable skills, (3) willingness to change jobs and (4) to develop competences, (5) opportunity awareness, (6) self-esteem, and (7) self-perceived employability (i.e., perceived...
Achieving change using the supply chain model in construction
Since the 1990s, the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) Construction Division has been working in partnership with industry to bring about better risk management within construction. One aspect of this work is the supply chain model, which attempts to take a cohesive approach by drawing together stakeholders from across the construction industry to develop solutions together. To date, seven different strands of work, each targeting a different process or health risk, have been initiated or completed. Source : http://www.hse.gov.uk/research/rrhtm/rr843.htm
Participation in volunteering and unpaid work
Just over 20% of Europeans take part in voluntary and charitable activities, though there are wide differences between Member States. The highest rates are seen in the Nordic Member States (Denmark, Finland, Sweden) and the lowest rates are in Bulgaria, Greece, Malta, Portugal, Romania and Spain. People with a high level of educational attainment are more likely to be volunteers, as are those who attend religious services regularly. Based on data from the second European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS), conducted by Eurofound in 2007, this report examines the factors underpinning people’s decision...
Investing in well being at work
Addressing psychosocial risks in times of change As part of the EU's employment and social solidarity programme, PROGRESS, this publication “Investing in well-being at work” looks at the psychosocial risks in time of change. There is a growing body of evidence of the potential negative effects that restructuring has on the health of workers and their families. Uncertainty and job insecurity also represent an important link between restructuring programmes and effects on employees' health (depression, absenteeism, difficulty sleeping ...). This leaflet highlights some of the...
Minimising the impact of company restructuring
Restructuring, whether undertaken due to financial crisis, or as the result of corporate merger, is traumatic for individual workers, and can have profound economic effects on the local region. However, across Europe many enterprises have made significant efforts – often in collaboration with worker representatives and public authorities – to minimise the effects of job losses. These may include helping workers retrain or find new jobs, and consulting with them about how best to achieve longer-term goals. A report from Eurofound, ERM case studies: Good practice in company restructuring...
Health in Restructuring
The health dimension of enterprise restructuring is a widely neglected area of research, intervention and public concern. The HIRES expert group (supported by DG Employment in the PROGRESS programme) has examined and discussed a wide range of experience from different countries and from related European projects (DG Research, ESF, DG Employment) in which the members of this group have been involved over the last decade. The empirical evidence on the health impact of organisational restructuring, including possibilities to limit the adverse health effects through approaches of health promotion,...
World of Work Report 2008 - Income Inequalities in the Age of Financial Globalization
Despite strong economic growth that produced millions of new jobs since the early 1990s, income inequality grew dramatically in most regions of the world and is expected to increase due to the current global financial crisis, according to a new study published recently by the research arm of the International Labour Organization (ILO). The new report, entitled World of Work Report 2008: Income inequalities in the age of financial globalization, produced by the ILO's International Institute for Labour Studies also notes that a major share of the cost of the financial and economic crisis will...
