How should methods for return to work be evaluated?
"Measures to decrease early retirement are underway in many countries to increase the working population and lower costs. Sick leave is the normal pathway to early retirement and methods to enable persons on sick leave to return to work (RTW) earlier and at a higher rate are in focus. Using the term “RTW”, a search in PubMed resulted in about 300 papers, of which more than half have been published after 2008 and 20% during the last year alone. RTW has been the focus of many papers recently submitted to and published in the Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment and Health. In...

Using the Work Limitations Questionnaire in Patients With A Chronic Condition in the Netherlands
Objective : To examine the intelligibility and psychometric properties of the modified Dutch language version of the Work Limitations Questionnaire (WLQ) (WLQ-mdlv). Methods : Employed patients with a physical chronic condition completed the WLQ-mdlv, the Work Ability Index, and the 36-item short form health survey. Intelligibility, internal consistency, test–retest reliability, and external construct validity of the WLQ-mdlv were assessed. Results : In 125 patients, the WLQ-mdlv showed improved intelligibility for a Dutch population. With Cronbach α coefficients more than .80, squared...
The 'Ability' Paradigm in Vocational Rehabilitation
Challenges in an Ontario Injured Worker Retraining Program Introduction : In recent years, a focus on workers' ability, rather than impairment, has guided disability management services. However, a challenge with the notion of 'ability' is identification of the border between ability and inability. This article considers this gray zone of disability management in the case of a workers' compensation vocational retraining program for injured workers in Ontario. Methods : In-depth interviews and focus groups were conducted with a purposive sample of 71 participants who were directly...
Prognostic value of self-reported work ability and performance-based lifting tests for sustainable return to work among construction workers
Objective : This study aims to evaluate whether performance-based tests have additional prognostic value over self-reported work ability for sustainable return to work (RTW) in physically demanding work. Methods : A one-year prospective cohort study was performed among 72 construction workers on sick leave for six weeks due to musculoskeletal disorders. The Work Ability Index (WAI) question regarding “current work ability” was used. Three dynamic lifting tests were used from a Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE). Sustainable RTW was the number of days on sick leave until the first...
How well do observed functional limitations explain the variance in Roland Morris scores in patients with chronic non-specific low back pain undergoing physiotherapy?
Caporaso, F. et coll. How well do observed functional limitations explain the variance in Roland Morris scores in patients with chronic non-specific low back pain undergoing physiotherapy? European Spine Journal . Self-rated activity limitations in patients with non-specific chronic low back pain (cLBP) do not correlate well with performance in traditional tests of impairment (e.g. back strength, ROM, etc.). Tests using more “functional activities” have therefore been recommended as alternative “objective” outcome measures. We examined the relationship between a battery...
Evaluating Common Outcomes for Measuring Treatment Success for Chronic Low Back Pain
Chapman, J. R. et coll. (2011). Evaluating Common Outcomes for Measuring Treatment Success for Chronic Low Back Pain. Spine , 36 (21 Suppl): S54-S68. STUDY DESIGN.: Systematic review. OBJECTIVE.: To identify, describe, and evaluate common outcome measures in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA.: The treatment of CLBP has been associated with multiple clinical challenges. Further complicating this is the myriad of outcome scores used to assess treatment of CLBP. These scores have been used to examine different domains of patient satisfaction and quality of life...
Examining functional content in widely used Health-Related Quality of Life scales
Hall, Trevor et coll. (2011). Examining functional content in widely used Health-Related Quality of Life scales. Rehabilitation Psychology , 56 (2): 94-99. Purpose: Assess extent to which generic Quality of Life (QOL) and Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) scales include function in assessment of health, and identify health assessment items that are free of functional content. Methods: An expert panel on measurement of health and disability reached consensus on definitions of health, disability, and function. They assessed all items of all generic (non-condition-specific) scales in the 2006...

Disability & Rehabilitation , 33(13-14): 1147-1156. (accès limité) Purpose . The aim of this study is to determine differences in self-reported work ability, work conditions, health and function between ICD-10 groups with musculoskeletal disorders (MSD), mental disorders (MDs) and MSD ++ MD and to determine which variables are associated with sick leave. Method .  A cross-sectional study of 210...
The Concept of Work Ability
Tengland, Per-Anders (2011). The Concept of Work Ability. Journal of Occupational Rehabilitation , 21(2): 275-285. Introduction The concept of “work ability” is central for many sciences, especially for those related to working life and to rehabilitation. It is one of the important concepts in legislation regulating sickness insurance. How the concept is defined therefore has important normative implications. The concept is, however, often not sufficiently well defined. Aim and Method The objective of this paper is to clarify, through conceptual analysis, what the concept can and should...

Correlations between pain and function in a longitudinal low back pain cohort
McGorry, R.W. et al. (2011). Correlations between pain and function in a longitudinal low back pain cohort. Disability & Rehabilitation , 33 (11): 945-952. Purpose .   Most studies of low back pain (LBP) and functional limitation have been cross-sectional, and show only modest correlations between pain and function. Though functional limitation may be superior for predicting disability outcomes, there is a need to understand better the gap between pain and function. This study analysed changes in intra-individual correlations between pain and function over time. Method .   Seventeen...
Sickness certification for mental health problems: an analysis of a general practice consultation database
Mallen, Christian D. et al. (2011). Sickness certification for mental health problems: an analysis of a general practice consultation database . Primary Health Care Research & Development, 12 (2): 179-182. Background Although mental illness remains the leading cause of both sickness absence and incapacity benefit in most high-income countries, little is known about how frequently patients with mental ill-health receive sickness certificates and what conditions are most commonly certified for. This study aims to use general practice consultation data to determine the rate of sickness certification...
