The changing nature of work and the workforce
The canadian workforce has changed over the last 25 years. Today's workers are, on average, older, better educated and more likely to be immigrants. The type of work they do has also changed. Compared to 15 years ago, Canadians are more likely to be working in the service and knowledge sectors and less likely in the manufacturing and resource sectors. And ‘‘typical'' nine-to-five, full-time jobs are on the decline.

Promising the Best Practices in Total Worker Health (TM)

Workshop Summary
Combined with the more traditional employer occupational safety and health protection activities are newer employment-based programs to promote better health through helping workers quit smoking, lose weight, reduce stress, or exercise more regularly. In support of these efforts, some employers have made changes in their policies and facilities to support physical activity and healthier eating, and some employers connect with community resources for health education, health fairs, and other services. From company to company, the interest in, resources for, and ability to do more for employee health and well-being vary. Employees' interest in, needs for, and priorities for these types of programs also vary.
This diverse array of activities most typically has been planned, managed, and assessed—to the extent they exist in the workplace at all—by different, often uncoordinated departments within the business entity. Some employers have reconceptualized their safety, prevention, and promotion initiatives and attempted to bring them together into a coherent whole. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has supported this integration, defining Total Worker Health (TM) as “a strategy integrating occupational safety and health protection with health promotion to prevent worker injury and illness and to advance  health and well-being.”
In May 2014, with support from NIOSH, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) organized a 1-day workshop on Total Worker Health. Rather than a review of published literature, this workshop sought input from a wide variety of on-the-ground stakeholders regarding their experiences with integrating occupational safety and health protection with health promotion in the workplace.

Climate Change and Occupational Safety and Health

Weather and climate patterns are changing, causing increasingly frequent and severe heat waves, drought, flooding, and extreme weather events, as well as a rise in sea levels, a report released in May by the U.S. Global Change Research Program concluded (National Climate AssessmentExternal Web Site Icon). Global climate change has become one of the most visible environmental concerns of the 21st century and these changes have the potential to affect human health both directly and indirectly.
Today, the United Nations is hosting Climate Summit 2014 to bring together world leaders at the highest level to address climate change and galvanize support for climate action.
When President Obama signed Executive Order 13653 in November 2013, he committed “to prepare the nation for the impacts of climate change by undertaking actions to enhance climate preparedness and resilience.” The challenge is to characterize how these climate events may influence worker health and safety and to establish plans for mitigating, responding, and adapting to the current and anticipated impacts.

Scoping study for a foresight on new and emerging occupational safety and health (OSH) risks and challenges

This report describes the methodology and findings of a scoping study examining emerging trends and areas of future concern in OSH and their potential for a future large-scale foresight study. A literature review, telephone interviews, online surveys and a consultation of expert opinion were carried out to identify and assess the suitability of these topics for study. Topics were ranked in terms of importance based on factors such as frequency of mention, the scale of the issue, priority given by stakeholders and likelihood of occurrence. Topics identified for further consideration were impact of ICT on OSH, trends in human resources management and the impact of the financial crisis on OSH.
