S’appuyant...

Early warning systems to detect new and emerging risks in Europe
All workers are entitled to work in environments where risks to their health and safety are properly controlled. This holds also for exposure to chemicals. Under the Dutch presidency of the European Union during the first half of 2016, The Netherlands aim to take action to reduce work related cancer. The identification of substances and work leading to work related health effects like cancer is therefore important. The way in which these substances and work processes can be identified needs both close cooperation between countries and the use of various methods. This report presents an overview...
Female breast cancer in Lombardy, Italy (2002–2009): A case–control study on occupational risks
Background The role of occupational exposures in breast cancer development is still uncertain and, to our knowledge, no studies have been recently carried out in Italy to provide a comprehensive estimation of this possible risk. Methods Based on administrative data, a case-control study was carried out recruiting all incident cases of female breast cancer in the period 2002–2009, aged between 35 and 69 years, residing in Lombardy, Italy. Controls were randomly sampled from all women residing in Lombardy as of December 31, 2005. Occupational histories, including blue-collar status, were available...

Work-related stress does not increase the risk of most common cancers
The joint European individual-participant data meta-analysis of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) and University College London (UCL) shows that work-related stress does not cause the most common cancers. A previous study of this subject has given inconsistent results. These new results were published in the British Medical Journal at the beginning of February 2013. The study followed 116, 000 people for an average of twelve years. During this time, five percent of these people developed some form of cancer. However, no association was found between work stress and the risk of...

Occupation and Leukemia in Nordic Countries
Objective: We studied occupational variation of the risk of acute myeloid leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and other leukemia in Nordic countries. Methods: The study cohort comprised 15 million persons older than 30 years who participated in the population censuses in1960, 1970, 1980/1981, 1990, or all of these years in five Nordic countries. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were estimated for 53 occupations and one group of economically inactive persons. Results: Significantly increased risks were observed for acute myeloid leukemia among drivers (SIR = 1.16; 95% confidence interval...

Only a fraction of occupational cancers being identified
A new study, published in September in the Journal of Occupational Medicine and Toxicology (Open Access) shows that, in most countries, the numbers of work-related cancers identified are much lower than are the estimated total burden of cancer attributal to work-related causes. The paper finds that even in countries using a number of the available methods for identification, only a limited fraction of the real number of work-related cancers are reported. The study recommends that clinicians familiarize themselves with the methods of identifying occupational cancers and strive to prevent them. Source...
